This project was run by Staffordshire Invertebrate Group who carried out a full survey of 18 kilometres of the AONB’s main river and canal network to investigate for the presence of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan species, the Depressed River Mussel, which has previously only been recorded from the River Trent at Colwich.
Habitat assessments were also carried out.
The study required creating good relations with the riparian landowners and managers as well as involving volunteers and a number of organisations. The findings have been pulled together into a report and a fact sheet on the species.
Unfortunately the results showed a lack of presence of the mussel and further studies are going to be carried out over the next year.
Total project cost £3,294.75. Match funding generated £823.75 (25%)
